World Thinking Day 2007

Each year on 22nd February, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world celebrate World Thinking Day. This special day marks the joint birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell who founded the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Movement. World Thinking Day reminds us that we are all part of a global organization supporting girls and young women, providing opportunities and helping them to develop new skills. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts join together every year to raise vital funds to enable WAGGGS to reach even more girls and young women across the globe. Just think – while you are celebrating World Thinking Day 2005, there are troops just like yours on the opposite side of the world doing the same!

Daisy Ridge celebrates this event by holding a World Thinking Day festival! At the festival, some troops will have displays and presentations, while others will simply attend to learn more about Girl Scouting around the world. Read below for more details.

World Thinking Day Details

Details for this year's event:

  • Friday, February 23rd, at 6:00pm will be our Service Unit's festival.
  • The festival will be held in the cafeteria of the Shamrock Middle School, 3100 Mount Olive Drive, (behind Shamrock Plaza), map it!
  • Cost $2/person or $10/troop.
  • Doors open at 6:00.
  • Arrive at 5:30pm if you have a booth or presentation, or if you would like to volunteer to help set up.
What to Expect

There are several aspects to our World Thinking Day festival; booths, presentations, and ceremonies.

Booths & the Passports
When you enter into the festival, girls will receive a passport to use when going from booth to booth. Some troops volunteer to put together booths about a country. Girls go from booth to booth, learning about countries and how scouting works within that country. At each booth, the girl will earn a stamp in their passport. The passport is a fun way to encourage girls to learn.

Presentations
Some troops will do dances, songs, and ceremonies that are traditional to another country.

Ceremonies
Some troops volunteer to perform ceremonies that are traditional to our own Girl Scouts of the USA.

Registration
Registration is due in advance at the February 17th service unit meeting.

    Booths
One way to get involved with World Thinking Day is to have your troop create a booth! This is a fun way not only to share what you've learned about a country with the other troops, but to teach the girls how to create a fun presentation.

Steps for a great Thinking Day booth
    Before the event:
  • The girls should design and create their booth. Remember, it's the girl's job to make the booths, not the troop leader's!
  • Bring swaps or snacks to share that represents your country!
  • Day of the event:
  • Arrive at 5:30pm to help set up the room.
  • Take down the booth at 8pm. Please have one person assigned to help us clean up the rest of the room.
  •
    Ideas!

    Ideas from other troops:

    • Use this opportunity to work on Hunger 101. One aspect of Hunger 101 is global hunger. Since this year's theme is food, this is a great opportunity to learn more about how disadvantaged countries cope.
